WHITE-KNIGHTING YOUR HEALTH

In this week’s INSIGHTS for Healing by Design, let’s investigate your level of white knight expectations when it comes to your health and honestly, your whole life experience.

I’ve heard 'THEM' say “NOBODY IS COMING TO SAVE YOU BUT YOURSELF”.

This is spoken and written so many times, it seems like it’s a capital “T” Truth.

But is it?

As a healthcare professional over the past two+ decades, who spends an extraordinary amount of time coaching patients towards wellness, I’ve become an advocate for teaching them to take responsibility for their state of dis-ease and owning the solutions to them. 

No one outside of a person is completely responsible for their lives long term (except in some cases, like with children, for example)

➡️Instead, I teach (and practice myself) to take full ownership of finding appropriate supports (like friends, colleagues, therapists, groups) and then doing the foundational work to achieve the desired outcomes for health and the rest of one’s life.

This concept of responsibility is one of my foundational principles I layer in my online women's group, The EASY YOUniversity, and in every patient interaction I engage in. This one thing can lead to more wins than you might imagine...

That said, however, I also want to point out that even though no one outside of you is responsible for your life as an adult, and no one is going to ride up on a white horse to save you from all the hard hits from life, people do save you in small, perhaps seemingly insignificant ways every single day.

LET ME EXPLAIN...

🎁 Sometimes I’ve been so down, I could barely look someone in the face walking down the street. But the smile a stranger gave me seemingly out of nowhere, brightened my day enough to help me start shining again.

🎁 I’ve woken up on the “wrong side of the bed” a time or two or twenty, and that first hug of the morning from my sweetheart and snuggles with my pets sets life towards happy again.

🎁 Then, how many times have I reached out to a friend or family member with a hardship on my mind and came away feeling lighter and ready to commit to a decision?

🎁 The oddles of times I've reached out to a medical colleague to dial in a concept I've been studying to help elevate a patient's experience.

🎁 And not to mention reading hundreds of books in my lifetime and gaining wisdom from their earth journey that changes the trajectory of my own in great ways.

We are saved by others in small ways every single day.

Do you notice these moments - YET?

Because they add up to both big and small NUDGES FROM THE UNIVERSE - ways to take better care of your one, wild, precious life.

No one saves themselves alone, despite being ultimately responsible for choices made.

GET STARTED WITH THESE 2 THINGS RIGHT THIS MOMENT

  1. Take the next 10 minutes to jot down on some paper or as a note in your smartphone all the little and/or big SAVES you’ve experienced in your life today. I bet there are many. Feel deep appreciation for these gifts

  2. Now ask yourself what you haven’t been taking responsibility for today especially around something you’re struggling with, and COMMIT to finding and implementing solutions (with or without some saves from other people).
